Tiny Tales
Every month on the first Tuesday, I will post an image on Substack to inspire our Tiny Tales. We have three weeks to write something tiny (under 400 words). On the fourth Tuesday of the month, I will post my Tiny Tale, and you can post yours, too!
This Month’s Inspiration
Challenge Guidelines
Length
Under 400 words. The original Tiny Tale project began on Instagram, where I had a 2,200-character limit. In the spirit of tiny, we keep that limit in mind, but who’s counting?
Time
You have three weeks. The challenge will end, and I will post my Tiny Tale on the fourth Tuesday of the month. You may share your Tiny Tale at any time.
Inspiration
How should the image inform your Tiny Tale? Vibes. You could write the image exactly in your tale, or use something from the image and take off with it!
Style
Write in whichever prose style you want, including poetry. It should be a tale, not just flash fiction. Not just a scene of contemporary fiction or a character introduction with little to no plot. It should read like a very short fairy tale found in a larger collection or a story told by your grandmother putting you to bed. It can absolutely be inspired by, reference, or retell a known fairy tale.
Sharing
You may post your completed Tiny Tale wherever you like, or keep it to yourself. Please tag me if you post on Substack (@Tish Black) or Instagram (@taleswithtish).
You may post the inspiration image alongside your writing, if you choose. All images used for the Tiny Tale Challenge are sourced from public domain art collections.
Submissions
If you would like your Tiny Tale published here alongside mine on the fourth Tuesday of the month, you may submit it via this form.
I hope you’ll join me in writing, or just reading, Tiny Tales every month. Even if you’re not a writer, maybe the tiny inspiration can lead you to create in other ways! Whatever you do with the inspiration, I’m happy to help facilitate it.
